Why did Moses Austin come to Texas?
By Forinfos - 11/04/2026 - 0 comments
Moses Austin came to Texas, which was owned by Spain at the time, to establish an American colony. His dream was short-lived because he died two months after beginning the colonization efforts. His son Stephen Austin carried on with the colonization, with the first colonists arriving in 1921.
Moses Austin was a primary influence in the growth of the American lead industry. After facing various economic ups and downs that eventually resulted in bankruptcy, Moses decided to pursue his idea for the Spanish Texas colony. His first request was refused by the governor of San Antonio, but with the help of an acquaintance and persistence, he later received approval.
