In what year did Texas become a state?

Texas became a state on December 29, 1845. The Lone Star State was the 28th state admitted to the Union, preceded by Florida and followed by Utah.

Texas was first settled in the 16th and 17th centuries by Spanish explorers. The first American settlers, led by Stephen F. Austin, arrived in Brazos River region in the early 1820s, when the area was under Mexican control. After a brief war with the Mexican government, Texas gained independence in 1835, establishing the Independent Republic of Texas. When Texas achieved statehood, disputes over the state's boundaries ensued, leading to the Mexican-American War of 1846 to 1848.
