Texas entered the Union as a slave state on Dec. 29, 1845. It is the 28th state to enter the Union in the United States.
Attempts were made as early as 1837 to negotiate annexation of Texas with the Union, but it was strongly opposed due to the fact that it was a slave state. James K. Polk was elected in 1845, allowing Texas to be admitted into the Union.
Texas is the second largest state, and the second most populous after California. It is nicknamed The Lone Star State. The name Texas comes from the Caddo word Tejas, meaning "friends."
