The majority of the city of Dallas falls under the jurisdiction of Dallas County. However, parts of the city are also in Collin, Denton, Rockwall and Kaufman Counties. The city of Dallas has a total area of 385.8 square miles, 45.3 of which are made up of water.

The city of Dallas was first incorporated on Feb. 2, 1856, and has a local government that is led by a mayor. As of 2014, the mayor of Dallas is Mike Rawlings. The population of the city, according to 2013 estimates, is approximately 1,257,676, making it the ninth most populous city in the United States.
