Indianapolis, the capital of Indiana, is located in Marion County. It is the 12th largest city in America. The 2010 census indicates that the population of the city of Indianapolis was 820,445.
In 1820, Indianapolis was selected to be the state's capital, replacing Corydon. Corydon had been the capital since 1816, the year the state of Indiana was formed. Indianapolis is well known for its high-rise buildings. Construction for most of these buildings began in 1888. In 1898, the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument was built. The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument was the tallest building in Indianapolis. It remained the tallest building until 1962 when the City-County Building was built.
