Water covers 2/3 of the land on Earth. Roughly 71 percent of the Earth's total surface area is water, though it is always in flux due to changes in weather and climate patterns.

Of all the water found on Earth, around 97 percent of it is contained in the oceans. Water vapor, lakes and rivers only account for 1 percent of the Earth's water. The remaining 2 percent is freshwater that is frozen in ice caps or glaciers. The relative scarcity of freshwater has led to concerns, especially in the developing world. Water is constantly moving and transitioning from one state to another through a process known as the water cycle.
