A dental crown is a common covering used when giving a patient various types of false tooth inserts, according to WebMD. This tooth-shaped cap is placed over top of an existing tooth to give it the desired shape and to support other dental appliances.

Crowns are secured to existing tooth structures, and they fully encase the tooth visible above the gum line. When used in a dental bridge, the crowns serve as an anchor for the full tooth replacements, according to DocShop. Crowns are also used for cosmetic modifications, to change the shape of a tooth or to cover discoloration. WebMD states that crowns are most often made of stainless steel, other alloys, porcelain-fused-to-metal, resin or ceramic.
