Cattle are even-toed ungulates or hoofed animals that are classified as artiodactyls, which is an herbivorous order of mammals that have cloven feet. They bear their weight equally on their third and fourth toes, unlike horses that are odd-toed ungulates and bear their weight entirely on their third toes.
There are 210 species of artiodactyls. Cattle fall under the suborder Ruminantia, which pays reference to animals that have stomachs with three or four parts. Some other Ruminantia species include giraffes, mouse deer, moose, caribou, elk and moose. Cattle are further classified under the family Bovidae along with goats, sheep and antelope.
