CPT codes are five-digit codes that describe medical procedures such as surgeries, treatments, diagnostic tests and consultations in a uniform way, notes the AMA. Physicians use them to communicate with other care providers and insurers regarding patient care they have performed. The AMA initiated CPT codes in 1966 as a way to increase efficiency and decrease costs among health insurance companies and providers.
