Common procedural terminology codes are developed by the American Medical Association and are used by coders and billing personnel in the health-care industry to submit bills to Medicaid, Medicare and insurance companies. There are three categories of codes, explains the AAPC. Category I codes are used for medical procedures, category II codes are optional tracking codes used to measure performance, and category III codes are used collect data about new and emerging procedures and technology.
