What does a crabapple look like?

Crabapples, also called wild apples, are miniature versions of apples, measuring 2 inches or less in diameter. Depending on the variety, crabapples are green, orange, yellow, red or purple in color.

Over 1,000 varieties of crabapple trees exist, with approximately 100 varieties found in the United States. Some crabapple trees release their fruits when they ripen, while others hold fruit into late winter. While most crabapple varieties have a tart, almost sour flavor, the Chestnut cultivar produces fruit with a sweet, nutty flavor. Crabapples, which are high in pectin, are used to make ciders, jellies, sauces, tarts and other desserts.
