Who created the Mormon religion?

Mormonism was founded by Joseph Smith in 1820. When he was 14, he went into a grove of trees near his home and prayed for guidance in choosing a church to attend. He claims God the Father and Jesus the Son appeared, and subsequently guided him to creating the Church.
According to the website for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Joseph Smith was told by God the Father and Jesus the Son that the church was originally founded by Jesus, and that the Church was no longer on the earth. With this spiritual guidance, Joseph Smith set out to recreate the Church of Jesus, receiving, among other things, more spiritual visits in the following years and translations of the Book of Mormon by God.
