"Plants vs. Zombies" was created by PopCap Games, a game development and publishing studio that built the game on the PopCap Games Framework system. The designer for "Plants vs. Zombies" was George Fan, and the game also features music composed by Laura Shigihara.

"Plants vs. Zombies" was initially released on May 5, 2009, and is considered a tower defense game that can be played in both single-player and multiplayer modes. As of 2016, "Plants vs. Zombies" is available on a wide variety of platforms, including Microsoft Windows, Xbox Live Arcade, the PlayStation Network, the BlackBerry Tablet OS and Android devices.
