A croup cough sounds like a barking seal or dog, according to WebMD. Croup causes narrowed airways and other symptoms, including a raspy, hoarse voice and a crowing noise when breathing. The symptoms often improve during the day and get worse at night.

Croup is a contagious respiratory problem caused by the same viruses as the common cold, states WebMD. It is most likely to occur in the fall and winter. Croup usually affects children between the ages of 3 months and 6 years and lasts for five to six days. Most cases are mild and get better with rest and care at home.
