When was cruise control first invented?

Ralph Teetor invented the modern cruise control in 1945. Then known as "Auto-Pilot," the cruise control function first became available on new Chrysler models in 1958.

Teetor lost his sight at age 5 in a shop accident but went on to become a well-respected mechanical engineer and inventor. One day, Teetor became carsick from his lawyer's inconsistent driving. This prompted Teetor to try to invent a device that automatically controlled a vehicle's speed. The device was called "controlomatic," "speedostat" and "Auto-Pilot" before finally becoming known by its modern name.

Teetor developed many more car improvements, including automatic transmission. He eventually became the president of the Society of Automobile Engineers.
