The first touchscreen computer was invented in 1965. It was developed by E.A. Johnson, who patented a touchscreen device for air traffic control in 1969.

This early touchscreen computer was unlike contemporary iterations in that it could only process information from a single touch at a time. Nevertheless, Johnson's invention was used until 1995.

In 1973, CERN engineers Ben Stumpe and Frank Beck created a capacitive touchscreen for use with a stylus or other hard object.

It was not until the early 1980s that the "Elograph," a resistive touchscreen that responded to the touch of a finger, was invented and manufactured for consumers.
