What is a CT angiogram?

A CT angiogram, which stands for computed tomography angiogram, uses X-rays to show many of the blood vessels in the body, according to WebMD. Detailed pictures of the heart and blood vessels help doctors determine if there is a blockage, where it has developed and how large it is.
Generally, a CT angiogram checks for conditions such as pulmonary embolism, peripheral artery disease, plaque buildup in the arteries and heart issues such as pericarditis, explains WebMD. Sometimes a medication to slow the heart rate may be necessary before the test. A special dye injected through an intravenous line makes blood vessels easier to see.
