Most ear infections heal on their own without professional medical treatment, according to WebMD. Consult a doctor if an earache persists for more than a few days, if the earache is in a child under age two, or if a fever or other symptoms develop.

To alleviate the discomfort of an earache, use anti-inflammatory pain relievers such as ibuprofen, aspirin or naproxen. Read all the labels, especially if a child is taking the medicine. To treat an ear infection, WebMD also advises getting plenty of rest, using ear drops according to doctor's orders and applying a warm washcloth to the ear.
