What is the currency of Austria?

The Euro is Austria's official currency, as of 2014. A total of 18 European Union member states share the Euro as their official currency, which means that bank notes and coins can be spent in any of these countries.

Austrian department stores, hotels and major restaurants usually accept credit cards, but many cafés, grocery stores and small stores do not, so travelers may need to carry some cash. Automatic teller machines, which are called "bankomats" in the region, are available outside most Austrian banks. Individuals who carry more than 10,000 Euro when they travel between European Union states must declare their holdings to the customs authorities.
