What is the current Bengal tiger population?

There are fewer than 2,500 Bengal tigers in the wild as of 2013. Bengal tigers are on the endangered animals list because hunting and forest destruction has decimated their numbers in the wild. They are hunted for trophies and for their body parts, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine.

The Bengal tiger is mainly found in India, with smaller populations present in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, China and Myanmar. It has the highest population numbers of all tiger subspecies. This is a result of conservation efforts that were started in the 1970s. The Bengal tiger is also found in the mangroves of the Sundarbans, an area shared between Bangladesh and India.
