As of September 2014, John Dramanl Mahama of Ghana is the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS. He was elected to the position in March 2014, succeeding Alassane Ouattara of the Ivory Coast.

ECOWAS is an organization of 15 West African countries that was founded in 1975. Its purpose is to promote the region's economy and to help its members achieve economic self-sufficiency. ECOWAS functions as a trading and economic union. It also works toward regional peacekeeping and supervises the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development. When Mahama stepped into the position of chairman, one of his top priorities was to restore economic stability to Mali.
