Is a current medical card needed for CDL renewal?

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation requires a current medical card is required for commercial drivers license renewal, as of 2015. Non-excepted inter and intrastate CDL drivers must fulfill this requirement.

Commercial vehicle drivers engaged in interstate or intrastate commerce and driving vehicles with a gross weight rating of above 10000 pounds must submit a medical examiner's certificate to their state driver licensing agency when renewing a CDL.

The drivers must also declare which operation categories they belong to: Interstate non-excepted, intrastate non-excepted, interstate excepted andiIntrastate excepted. Excepted drivers, such as drivers who drive fire trucks, ambulances and school buses among others, need not fulfill the medical card requirements.
