As of 2014, the cutoff date is September 30 to start kindergarten in Woodbridge, Va., according to Prince William County guidelines. Children must be 5 years old, unless they begin kindergarten in another state and transfer. This exception accommodates the large, mobile military population in Virginia.

Virginia compulsory attendance laws require children who are age 5 by the cutoff to enroll in kindergarten or prekindergarten unless parents notify the local school board of a school entry delay. A one-year delay is allowed, and exemptions for health reasons may be requested. Children may attend a public, private or home school or be tutored.
