What is a cyclamen plant?

Cyclamen is a popular houseplant that grows from a tuber. The dark green heart-shaped leaves and pink, white or red flowers make this perennial a popular gift.
Cyclamen plants grow in a mound shape, and the flowers reach above the foliage. These plants flower during the winter and prefer cool areas. They prefer indirect light and do best when the temperature is about 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Cyclamens thrive in soil that is moist but not overly dry or soggy.
Since it is difficult to propagate cyclamens from seed, most people just buy the plants. The only real problem associated with cyclamens are insects, which growers can easily kill with insecticidal soap.
