D5W solution is a solution that is comprised of 5 percent dextrose in water. It is commonly given to patients intravenously and consists of 278 mmol/L of dextrose.
D5W is in a group of medicines considered intravenous sugar solutions, along with D5NS and D5 1/2NS. The main usage of this drug is to provide fluid replacement for patients who are dehydrated. D5W is also available as a prescription but is more commonly administered in a hospital setting. Patients who have exhibited allergies to dextrose in the past are warned to inform doctors and nurses, as it is likely that they will be allergic to the D5W solution as well.
