Dark brown urine can be a symptom of liver malfunction, and one of the possible causes of liver malfunction is liver cancer, according to Mayo Clinic. Yellow eyes and skin accompanied by pale stool are additional signs of liver failure.
Dark brown urine can also be a sign that a person has eaten a lot of rhubarb, aloe or fava beans, as stated by Mayo Clinic. Other liver and kidney disorders can cause dark brown urine, as can urinary tract infections and taking such medications as primaquine and chloroquine for malaria, laxatives with senna or cascara, the muscle relaxant methocarbamol, and the antibiotics nitrofurantoin and metronidazole.
