What is a daughtercard?

A daughtercard, also known as a daughterboard, is a circuit board that serves as an extension to another circuit board, such as a motherboard or sound card. It can access resources such as memory and the central processing unit on the main board.

A daughterboard has connectors, pins and sockets that allow it to connect to the main board. It lets people install expansion cards in their computers so that these expansion cards are in an upright position and save space.

Some electronic companies also use daughterboards to expand the functionality of their electronic devices without redesigning the original devices. They install these daughterboards on top of the main board so that the two boards are parallel.
