At least 1,836 people died from Hurricane Katrina and its related effects, with 1,577 of the deaths occurring in Louisiana or among Louisiana residents evacuating out of state. As of 2014, 135 Louisiana residents are still listed as missing.

Hurricane Katrina struck the Louisiana coast as a Category 3 storm on Aug. 29, 2005. The storm had already crossed southern Florida, causing 14 deaths there, but was much deadlier in Louisiana due to a massive storm surge that damaged or destroyed many of the levees protecting New Orleans. Katrina caused extensive flooding and an estimated $108 billion in property damage. As of 2014, it remains the costliest hurricane in U.S. history.
