The deepest oil well in the world is well Z-44 in Chayvo oil field located of the coast of Sakhalin Islands. These islands sit in the far northeast of Russia. The well was drilled in 2012 and measures 7.69 miles in the ground.

This oil well is owned and operated by Exxon Neftegas Ltd. The well is part of three oil fields at the site named the Sakhalin-1 fields. The development of this oil field is the combined effort of ENL, Japanese SODECO, the India-owned ONGC Videsh Ltd, and Russian-owned Sakhalinmorneftegaz Shelf and RN Astra. The wells at the shelf are expected to produce 2.3 billion barrels of oil.
