Where was the first oil well drilled?

The first commercial oil well was drilled by Edwin Drake in 1859 near Titusville, Pennsylvania. While not the first well to produce oil, the Drake oil well was the first to have been drilled for the purpose of finding oil.

The exact location of the Drake oil well is at Cherrytree Township in the northwestern part of Pennsylvania. At a production capacity of around 20 barrels per day, the oil produced at Drake oil well is quite small by modern standards. Early oil wells were very dangerous since fires could and did break out. Drake's first oil well burnt down only a few months after its construction.
