What is the definition of Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is the term used for a wireless local area network that conforms to one of the 802.11 network standards established by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. This type of network allows computers and a myriad of compatible devices to connect to a wireless router.

It is the wireless version of an Ethernet network and is typically deployed in conjunction with a wired network backbone. Connectivity to the Internet is dependent on whether the specific Wi-Fi network the user is accessing is Internet connected. Wi-Fi networks can be publicly accessible or security protected for private use. Standards are maintained and certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance.
