The Italian-American artist Anthony de Francisci designed and engraved the 1922 Peace Dollar, which depicts an eagle on one side and Lady Liberty on the other. The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts chose de Francisci's design out of several others entered in its 1921 contest to design a silver dollar.
In his original design, de Francisci had the eagle sitting on a broken sword to symbolize the coin's theme of peace, but some people interpreted the broken sword as a symbol of defeat and surrender, so he excluded it from the final design. He used his wife, Teresa de Francisci, as the model for Lady Liberty.
