What determines eligibility when registering for a MasterCard credit card?

Credit requirements for a MasterCard credit card vary from one bank to another and among different cards from the same bank. Cards with lower fees and interest rates generally require a better credit score than cards with higher fees and interest.

Banks evaluate credit reports, income level and employment history when considering a credit card application. Consumers who have poor credit histories may qualify for a secured MasterCard. This type of card requires a security deposit equivalent to the credit line on the account.

Some MasterCards for people with poor credit may have exceptionally high interest rates and fees. They may also require payment of some fees in advance before the consumer can use the card.
