Amelia Earhart made a strong contribution in breaking the stereotypical molds of women in the early 1900s. On May 25, 1923, Amelia Earhart received her license to fly airplanes.
As the first woman to fly solo around the United States, Amelia Earhart became an idol to women across the country. She proved to men and women that women were as capable as men in nearly anything they set their mind to. In 1932, after becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, she was awarded the National Geographic Society's Special Gold Medal. In 1937, she attempted to fly around the world, but disappeared. Neither her body or the plane was ever found.
