Badminton first became a full-medal sport at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Prior to that, badminton was a demonstration sport at the 1972 Summer Olympics and an exhibition sport at the 1988 Summer Olympics.
As of 2014, badminton has been a medalled sport at six different Summer Olympics. During that time, 63 different nations have participated in badminton at the Olympic level. At the 1992 Olympics, four events were held in badminton: singles and doubles competitions for both men and women. At the 1996 Olympics, a mixed doubles competition was added for badminton. As of 2014, China has won the most Olympic medals in badminton with 38, including 16 gold.
