Is soccer an Olympic sport?

While it often takes a backseat to the FIFA World Cup, soccer is an Olympic event. The sport has been included in the modern Olympic Summer Games each year except 1896 and 1932; the women's event was added to the Olympic slate in 1996.
The inaugural event was held at the 1900 Summer Games in Paris, with Great Britain, France and Belgium taking the gold, silver and bronze medals. As of 2014, Great Britain, winner of the first four, and Hungary, which last won in 1968, have taken the gold medal three times each. The United States has won four of the first five women's gold medals in Olympic competition.
