Do Olympic athletes get paid?

Olympic athletes do not get paid much money unless they win big or are famous. According to Business Insider, the United States Olympic Committee gives medal bonuses: $25,000 goes to a gold medalist, $15,000 to a silver medalist and $10,000 to a bronze medalist.

The United States Wrestling Federation gives wrestlers a $250,000 bonus for winning a gold medal. Notable athletes such as Ryan Lochte, Shaun White, Apollo Ohno and Michael Phelps earn millions of dollars from endorsements. Most Olympic athletes, especially those in track and field, only make a little over $15,000 per year, says Business Insider. Athletes who play obscure sports generally don’t get paid.
