Where did the Calusa Indians live?

The Calusa Indians lived in southwestern Florida. These Indians were some of the first that were written about by the explorers from Spain and it is believed that they could have numbered well into the thousands.

The exact number of Calusas that lived in Florida is unknown, but at the time that the King of the Calusa Indians made an agreement with the Spanish governor, there were approximately 4,000 people in attendance. These native people grew minimal crops, surviving mostly on fishing and hunting for their food. With the waterways and coastal areas that they lived along, fish was always an accessible resource to feed their people and to sustain them year round.
