The eight-track tape came out in 1965 and was popular until the late 1970s. When the format was released, eight-track tapes enjoyed phenomenal success, as well as players for the home and some vehicles.
The eight-track tape had a consistent loop of ¼-inch magnetic tape, which was located in a plastic cartridge. It gets its name from the fact that there were eight parallel soundtracks on each tape, as opposed to a different quantity of tracks on cassette tapes, which were made popular later. Audio cassette tapes replaced eight-track tapes in the 1970s, though they were actually invented in 1962 in the Netherlands, before the invention of the eight-track player.
