When did cassette tapes come out?

Cassette tapes for playing and recording music were thought to be introduced in 1958 by RCA. Prior to the 1950s, German engineers released an item called the Magnetophon in 1935, which was based on the 1928 invention of magnetic tape.

The RCA invention was improved upon in 1962 by Phillips and, in 1964, trademarked the term "compact cassette." This is approximately when mass production of music cassettes began, although vinyl records continued to be popular for many years. During the late 1980s, cassettes began to lose their popularity as compact discs became popular. The introduction of MP3s and MP3 players permanently made cassettes for music listening and recording obsolete.
