Ethiopia was able to resist the rule of Italians because of their able leader, Menelik II. He was able to lead the Ethiopian army to fight the Italians during the Battle of Adwa.
Ethiopia and Liberia were the only two countries in Africa that were not colonized. Italy was able to colonize part of ancient Ethiopia, which is now called Eritrea. Under the distinguished leadership of Emperor Menelik II, Ethiopia defeated the Italians in the Battle of Adwa on March 1, 1896. The political structure of Ethiopia contributed to their unified military response against the Italian Invasion. At the end of the battle, more than 7,000 Italian soldiers and approximately 4,000 to 5,000 Ethiopian soldiers were killed.
