How did Fanta get its name?

Fanta derived its name from the German "fantasie," meaning "imagination." Coca-Cola's operator in Germany, Max Keith, had asked the employees for ideas on what to name the new beverage and told them to use their imagination. One of the salesmen, Joe Knipp, replied "Fanta!"

Fanta was created in the 1940s in World War II-era Germany, when ingredients for Coca-Cola were difficult to acquire due to that branch being cut off from the headquarters. This led to the creation of a new beverage using what remained available, including whey and pomace. Fanta was discontinued after the war but was eventually relaunched in 1955.
