The first dictator appeared in Roman times, when Aulus Postumius Albinus became the first dictator of Rome during the first decade of the 5th century B.C.E. as a result of a revolution by the Latin allies. The term "dictator" did not have the same meaning then as it does now. It was the title given to a Roman magistrate who had special authority to act solely in times of emergency.

The most notable dictator of modern times was Hitler, who rose to power as leader of the Nazi Party in Germany during World War II. In a bid to create his ideal Aryan race, his leadership resulted in the extermination of millions of people in concentration camps during the Holocaust.
