The first Gordon Food Service opened in 1897. The company was started by Isaac Van Westenbrugge when he borrowed $300 with the intention of opening an egg and butter delivery business. Van Westenbrugge began the business by selling to local grocery stores and delivered products via horse and wagon.

Van Westenbrugge later partnered with William Erb to form Van Westenbrugge and Erb in 1905. In 1914, the company bought its first motorized delivery truck and became the first company in Grand Rapids to own one. The company was renamed Gordon Food Service in 1942 after the retirement of Van Westenbrugge. Ben and Frank Gordon reorganized and took over the company.
