When did people first settle in Rome?

According to the Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of World Cities, Rome was founded in the middle of the 8th century B.C. Rome has been occupied continuously for over 2,700 years.

Rome had humble beginnings as an Iron Age hut village. It became a Republic in 509 B.C. after the Etruscans were removed from the city. The Etruscans had taken over Rome in 616 B.C. Rome fought three Punic wars, all with the intent of gaining dominance over the Mediterranean and defeating Carthage, another major seat of power at the time. Rome went on to dominate the entire western Hellenistic world before the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 B.C. brought the Republic to its end.
