Where did the French establish their first permanent settlement?

The French established their first permanent settlement in the New World in what is known today as Quebec. This city became one of the cities within "New France," an area of explored and claimed land for France in the New World.

Samuel de Champlain was the French explorer who found Quebec and established it as a city for France in June of 1608. To claim the land, Champlain built a fort and started a promising fur trading organization that would even include the Native Americans in the area. He also helped to map the rest of the New France colonies around the Great Lakes and eastern coastline.
