When did Green Shield Stamps end?

Green Shield Stamps were released by the Green Shield Trading Stamp Company from 1958 to 1991. The stamps, released in the United Kingdom and Ireland, were a part of a rewards program that modeled itself after stamp collecting and trading practices.

Caught in a price war in the 1970s, many retailers began to abandon the Green Shield Stamp scheme in favor of direct price cutting. The Green Shield Trading Stamp Company discontinued the stamps in 1983, but brought them back in 1987. By 1991, issuance of the stamps ceased permanently. The initial stamps were issued for 2 1/2 new pence, with a new stamp worth 20 new pence released later.
