Hurricane Andrew occurred over a period of 12 days, from August 16, 1992 to August 28, 1992, and it was most destructive in South Florida. Louisiana and the Bahamas experienced major damage as well.
The hurricane was a category 5, with winds peaking at 165 to 175 miles per hour. Hurricane Andrew is one of the most devastating storms in U.S. history, causing around $26.5 billion in damage. As of 2014, only Hurricane Ike, Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Katrina were costlier. Nearly 70 lives were lost, and thousands were left homeless. Hurricane Andrew is one of dozens of category 5 storms to hit the Atlantic region of the United States in the last 100 years.
