Hurricane Wilma was a powerful storm that hit the coast of South Florida on Oct. 24, 2005. Naples was the first city to receive the impact of the hurricane when it landed at 6:30 a.m. with winds up to 125 miles per hour.
In a matter of hours, the storm covered a 150-mile radius across southern Florida, including passes through Greenacres and Key Biscayne. The storm killed 25 people and contributed to 3.2 million power outages. The devastation caused by the storm caught many Florida residents off guard, especially in the wake of the highly publicized Hurricane Katrina, which hit the Gulf Coast just one month earlier.
