Popular forms of housing for native tribes in the Southwest included adobes and earthen houses, though there were many different tribes in the Southwest and about as many different forms of housing.
Native American tribes typically used whatever materials were available to them to build both temporary and long-term housing. The sand and hot desert sun of the Southwest made the perfect combination for adobes, which are basically structures made of dried sand or dirt mixed with water. Similarly, in more wooded areas where the ground was comprised primarily of dirt, native tribes would sometimes dig holes in the earth and then use dried mud, leaves and branches to create a roof.
